Apologies for the lack of blog updates recently, we’ll shortly catch up with playlists from the last few weeks and what a few weeks they have been. Paul from Joyzine took over the show and one of our favourite electro-pop duo’s Heads.Hearts were live in session last week and on yesterday’s show we were very exited to have a Kids Love Lies takeover show.

Here at Propaganda we simply love Kids Love Lies, from playing their early demos on Earwax to their My Live Session appearance to playing all their singles on Propaganda, Kids Love Lies are a band we have supported from their earliest days, so with the release of their Stars EP we invited them down to Xstream East HQ to takeover a show. They played 3 Acoustic Tracks for us and chose all the music.

I Use The NME - The Original Propaganda Radio Show

I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, last Friday NME Radio launched Radio Propaganda an Alex Zane fronted two hour advert for the Propaganda Club Nights. Now we were a little miffed to find that they had pretty much stolen our name. I know we are only a small online radio show but having been broadcasting for the last 12 months we have built up a loyal following. A quick google search for Propaganda Radio or Radio Propaganda will bring up this Blog, our Myspace, Twitter, Facebook and Soundcloud pages. I find it very hard to believe that either NME Radio or the Propaganda Club Brand didn't know that we exist.

Now we can understand why they have called it Propaganda, it is the club night who are paying for the show, but it would have been nice for NME Radio to have the common courtesy to let us know they were going to undo our hard work.

We will continue to use the Propaganda name as that's what people know us by, well until Club NME want to sponsor our show.

I would also like to point out that I like NME Radio which makes it even more annoying, we were both big fans of XFM in the early days and it was great to see that team have another go at Radio. Any station with Iain Baker, Claire Sturgess and Jon Hillcock is alright with me. By the way we have no plans to launch a magazine called NME or start a club night called Propaganda.

It's nearly a year since Propaganda started broadcasting on Xstream East. Over the last 12 months we have been proud to bring you live sessions from the likes of The Indelicates, Dexy, Anita Maj and Ceri James. We have also featured special guests Bashy, Daisy Dares You, Sound Of Rum, Don't Wait Animate, Tough Love Records and Damaged Goods Records. It's been a year we have both really enjoyed and met some great people at Xstream East.

But don't fear there is still lots more to come and from next week we will be moving to Tuesday nights, listen from 19:00 for an hour of genre-hoppin new music goodness.

The Indelicates Propaganda Takeover

It's no secret that both Andy & Jamie at Propaganda love The Indelicates, I believe it was some time back in 2005 that we started featuring their demos on Earwax. Their debut Album 'American Demo' was voted our album of the year in 2008, so on the eve of the release of their second album we were both very excited that they agreed to host a takeover on Propaganda and play an exclusive session for us.

They played five songs in total and we can give you a sneak preview of two of them here. First track is We love You,Tania and the secod is Savages.

The Indelicates Are Taking Over Propaganda

We are very pleased to announce that one of our favourite bands The Indelicates will be hosting a takeover on this Thursday's show (11th Feb).

Formed in late 2005, The Indelicates have rapidly been establishing themselves as one of the most exciting new bands to come out of the UK.

Essentially the joint project of Simon Indelicate (formerly a performance poet and author of 'The Book Of Job: The Musical' and Julia Indelicate (an acclaimed documentary photographer) The Indelicates are a five piece, piano and guitar-led pop/rock act from Sussex, UK. Taking their musical cues from folk and classical sources - as well as the broad spectrum of British indie rock – they write melodic, edgy and intellectually coherent songs that have been consistently well-received in the UK and abroad.

Julia and Simon met at a Poetry slam (which he won) working together to perform and promote music, poetry, and the famous poets vs. mc's slams that characterised the Brighton 'scene'. Julia then went on to found 60's Tribute act The Pipettes, but left after a year and half to work instead on the rock/ punk music she and Simon had been writing.

They have performed live extensively playing more than 150 shows in London and the rest of England. They have also toured Germany and Austria four times, three times as a headline act and once as main support to Art Brut – playing six dates in 800+ capacity venues. They have headlined shows in such major european cities as Berlin, Rome and Paris, performed to acclaim at Texas' SXSW in March 2008, and have recently done a mini US tour of New York and the East Coast.

They have released three singles and an EP which have been widely reviewed and given international radio play. Over the last few months they have recorded an album for British/German indie label Weekender Records with producer Brian O'Shaugnessey (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Denim). The album was released simultaneously in the UK and Germany in April 2008.

They have been written about positively in the NME, the New Statesman, Artrocker, the Guardian, the Times, The Fly and other magazines. Internationally, they have been praised in Vanity Fair and Musik Express(Germany), Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and Time Out(US), and widely on internet blogs and music sites.

10. 90mph - Tom Williams & The Boat

Straight in at number 10 and straight out of Tonbridge Wells are Tom Williams and the Boat. This single from earlier in the year is what the E Street Band would have sounded like if they were from Kent. The above video is an acoustic demo of the track.

9. Under The Bed - Kids Love Lies

We have supported Kids Love Lies since their early demos, this is their second single release for Cherryade and is a slice of pure indie-opo perfection plus it has a rather fab video.

8. Tears In The Rain - The Palpitations

At Number 8 is a slice of Spector-style pop released on one of our favourite labels Pussing Pussy, It's The Palpitations with their debut single Tears In The Rain which was released in September.

7. Promethesus - Sound Of Rum

At Number seven is some south-east London Hip Hop courtesy of Sound Of Rum who played one of the best gigs we saw all year when they played The Birds Nest in Deptford back in July and provided us with our most surreal interview of the year on the roundabout outside. (No video exsists for Promethesus so we have included the video for Slow Slow which taken from the Balance EP which also includes Promethesus)

6.Time To Rest - Mr Bones And The Dreamers

Our track at Number 6 is from seven piece Birmingham band Mr Bones And The Dreamers and is taken from their In The Absence of Light EP released on Cat Cutter Records. It's been a favourite of both of ours this year and we are suckers for violins.

5.I Go I Go I Go - Wave Machines

Top 5 time now and this Liverpool band released this electro-pop gem back in June and it's rather infectious melodies have been in our heads since then. Also we strongly reccomend their debut album which it is taken from Wave If Your Really There.

4.Salt Air - Chew Lips

Another band we have supported since their earliest demos, Chew Lips relesed this single back in June. We are expecting massive things of their debut album due for release early 2010.

3.This Is Not The Fire - My Tiger My Timing

Our 3rd favourite track of 2009 is from South London Electro-pop heads My Tiger My Timing (It's getting boring saying this but another band we have supported since their earliest demos. When we gave the demo of this track a spin on Diesel U Music back in May 2008) This is their debut single and was released in May, another band for which we are very excited about their debut album.

2.Love Is The Path To Self Destruction - Brontosaurus Chorus

At Number 2 is quite simply the indie-pop anthem of 2009. Brontosaurus Chorus's Love Is The Path To Self Destruction. It seems like a life-time since this was released but it was in fact March when it was included on the rather ace mini-album You've Created A Monster. Which is available from the also rather ace Pop-Art records.

1.The Key - Speech Debelle

At number 1 is Speech Debelle and The Key our 2nd London Hip-Hop track in the Top 10. I think we played this on the first ever Propaganda show and Speech Debelle has probably been played more on Propaganda than any other artist. I think until her Mercury win in September we were probably the only radio show playing her material and no-one was more surprised and pleased than us when she went on to win the Mercury Music Prize.

Yes it’s that time of year again when we get to compile our favourite tunes of the year. Originally we were going to compile a Top 10 but we struggled to narrow it down so decided to select a Top 20 instead and split it over two shows, part one was broadcast last night and here are our choices.

At number 19 we have some House music straight from Germany released on Brighton label Southern Fried. Okay it's a little bit retro but has all the hallmarks of an anthem dirty bass, big strings and piano one of our favourite dance tunes of the year.

This ear-worm is straight out of Liverpool, pure electro pop at its finest, if this was a Girls Aloud release it would be number one in the real pop charts. We played this on it’s first release and then we played the rather fine DC Breaks remix on its re-release.

Here at Propaganda we love Lucky Soul, simply one of the greatest bands to emerge from South East London. One of our proudest moments on Earwax was when they played an acoustic session for us. Since then I have seen them numerous times in a strange variety of venues from a boat and the O2 Arena to the slightly more coventional Barfly.

For those of you who have not the joy of discovering Lucky Soul go buy their debut album The Great Unwanted which was released on Ruffa Lane which is indie-pop, with a hint of Motown and Spector style genius.

The second album is due next year and White Russian Doll (released on January 11th)will be the first single from it:

We Endorse Kids Love Lies

Last year we teamed up with Doug at the now defunct Strange Loop Studios to create a website called My Live Session, the idea was that we would present our radio show "earwax" as a live webcast and we would feature a band playing a 30 minute set. They were great fun why they lasted and the first band we featured were South Londoner's Kids Love Lies, a band whom we featured more on the earwax podcast in 2008then any other. On Earwax we played tracks from their demo and also their self released single Switch Off.

Since that session last October the band have gone from strength to releasing the single Count In My Head, gaining exposure in the NME, picking up airplay and being chosento be on the bill at Radio One's Big Weekend. Their second single for Cherryade records is being released this October and to accompany it, they have made this rather fun horror inspired video:

Delighted Of Tonbridge Wells

On Sunday, we travelled to deepest darkest Kent to a venue just outside Tonbridge Wells called the High Rocks to see British Sea Power and Tom Williams and the Boat. It was all-dayer which started at around 1pm; being lazy we managed to get to the venue about six and a half hours later. The venue is a converted Tudor barn which is used more these days for holding wedding functions hence the bar staff wearing tuxedos which is always a nice touch.

At Propaganda we are big fans of Tom Williams & The Boat and this was our first chance to see them live. Describing themselves as anti-folk their sound is bigger than that, the six piece comprise of guitars, violins, harmonica, piano and saxophone and Chris T-T played on piano on their last single 90mph. Their set was a very enjoyable 30 minutes; we recommend that you check them out:

Then we had to all vacate the building into another bar whilst the venue was shut for British Sea Power to create their unique stage set, in reality this was just so they could have a soundcheck. Because I don’t think it would have taken an hour to stick the few bits of foliage around the stage. The venue was re-opened before the soundcheck was finished and we had half an hour of the band finishing their soundcheck. There is nothing more boring than watching soundchecks I’ve seen to many over the years.

When they eventually started they delivered a storming set, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen them live and I’ve got into the band pretty late after not really liking the first album but live the early tracks seem almost primal and the later tracks like Waving Flags and No Lucifer sounded massive surely written with stadiums in mind. Even the snare drum falling apart couldn’t bring a halt to the gig which finished with an impressive climbing display.

On the way home we managed to just miss a badger on the road which seemed a very British Sea Power thing to see.
